Media and change…
It is no secret that the Erasmus program is designed to take any student out of their comfort zone. In my case, the semester abroad I spent in Montreal completely shifted my view on how media structures are constructed and the way they constantly change public opinion. During my time at Concordia University, I was able to explore journalistic patterns as an international media studies researcher.
Reframing HIV
During my time in Canada, I was able to conduct a mediatic research study. By focusing on the destigmatization of HIV, I was able to determine the role that news coverage during the AIDS outbreak of 1981 played in creating stigmas around the disease that have lasted to date.
Since the global pandemic in 2020, several campaigns like “Reframe COVID” have emerged due to the rise of disinformation. I chose to take on a similar approach towards HIV, tackling some of the prejudices that still haunt the LGBTQIA+ community and their representation in the public sphere.
